What is MITO?
Mitochondrial Disease - the body's inability to turn food into energy to sustain life.
Mitochondrial Disease can appear aa any disease at any age.
The Mitochondria are the power plants in almost every cell of the human body.
One in every 2000-4000 babies will be born with a mitochondrial disease or develop one by the age of 10. That number maybe higher because of the mis/underdiagnosis.
Many of these children will not reach the age of 10.
Mitochondrial dysfunction has been demonstrated to play a central role in diseases such as Atherosclerotic Heart Disease, Stroke, Type II Diabetes, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's disease and some forms of Cancer.
The World Health Organization (WHO) calculates that neurodegenerative diseases, also associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, will become the world's second leading cause of death by the year 2040.
Please help spread the word about Mitochondrial Disease!
